Wave Emulation: Experimental Synth with Optional Original Firmware

Wave Emulation: Experimental Synth with Optional Original Firmware

The Wave Emulation project is an experimental open-source synthesizer instrument available as a public download with no checkout required. Project-authored source and artwork use GPL-3.0-or-later; third-party components and sound data retain their own terms. The project is not affiliated with or endorsed by Waldorf. Producers can download precompiled binaries directly through GitHub without signing up for an account.

Emulation modes and firmware requirements

The Dave Whiting Wave Emulation operates under two distinct playback modes. To utilize authentic firmware-backed operation, you must provide your own legally obtained Wave OS 1.700 system files, specifically w2sys.bin and wdv.sys. Original firmware files and factory sound disks are strictly not included in the repository.

If you do not possess original ROM dumps, the instrument includes an integrated behavioral fallback mode. This fallback works without the original firmware, though it does not run the authentic Wave operating system code. The project is an ongoing experimental emulator rather than a bit-perfect or circuit-accurate hardware clone, and users should note that Windows 10 runtime confirmation is pending, and CPU-test crashes remain under investigation.

Supported formats and systems

According to the project documentation, precompiled builds support multiple plugin standards and host environments across desktop operating systems:

  • Windows (64-bit): VST3 plugin and standalone application
  • macOS (macOS 13 or later): VST3, AU, AAX, and standalone application for both Intel and Apple Silicon systems
