Beat length
Краткий ответ
Most full beats for rappers and singers run about 2:30 to 3:30, enough for an intro, two or three verses with hooks, and an outro. Social teasers run 15 to 60 seconds, and streaming or lo-fi instrumentals usually land between 2 and 3 minutes. Work out the length from bar counts and tempo, not from a timer.
How long should a beat be? Length by purpose
A full beat meant for a rapper or singer usually runs about 2:30 to 3:30. That leaves room for an intro, two or three verses, hooks and an outro without padding. Shorter versions exist for teasers and pitches, so the right length depends on who hears the file and why. The ranges below reflect common practice, not platform rules.
| Purpose | Typical length | What to include |
|---|---|---|
| Full beat for sale or lease | 2:30-3:30 | Intro, 2-3 verses, hooks, outro; tagged preview in the store |
| Pitch to an artist or A&R | 1:30-3:00 | Strongest section early; full version on request |
| Loop for a producer or topliner | 8-16 bars | The main loop, clean, with BPM and key in the filename |
| YouTube type beat (long-form) | 2:30-3:30 | The full beat; tag early, keep the intro short |
| Shorts, Reels or TikTok teaser | 0:15-0:60 | The hook or best 8 bars, no slow intro |
| Streaming or lo-fi instrumental | 2:00-3:00 | A complete arrangement with a change every 8 bars |
| Freestyle or cypher beat | 3:00-5:00+ | A stable loop with small changes so the rapper can keep going |
Why songs and beats have gotten shorter
Songs have been shrinking for three decades, and beats followed. A Washington Post analysis of Billboard Hot 100 data found that the average song fell from over four minutes to around three since 1990, after peaking at 4 minutes 21 seconds in 1992[1]. At the 2024 Grammys, 28 of the 144 nominated songs ran under three minutes[1].
Streaming pushes in the same direction. Spotify counts a stream once a song has played for at least 30 seconds[2], so a short song that gets replayed collects more counted plays than a long one. Skips add pressure: in Paul Lamere's 2014 analysis of Spotify data, 48.6 percent of plays ended before the song finished[3].
The lesson is not to make every beat two minutes long. It is to cut padding: long intros, repeated 16-bar blocks with no change, and outros that loop the hook four extra times.
How long should a beat be for rappers?
Build the beat from the song the rapper will write. Sixteen bars is the amount of time rappers are generally given for a guest verse[4] and hooks are commonly 8 bars, so a two- or three-verse map lands anywhere from under a minute and a half to over four and a half minutes, depending on tempo. Section lengths and how to count them are covered in how many bars in a verse.
| Arrangement map | Total bars | At 90 BPM | At 140 BPM | At 160 BPM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short: 2 intro, hook first, two 12-bar verses, 3 hooks, 2 outro | 52 | 2:19 | 1:29 | 1:18 |
| Two verses: 4 intro, 16 V, 8 H, 16 V, 8 H, 4 outro | 56 | 2:29 | 1:36 | 1:24 |
| Three verses: 8 intro, 3 x (16 V + 8 H), 8 outro | 88 | 3:55 | 2:31 | 2:12 |
| 8 intro, 2 x (16 V + 16 H), 8 bridge, 16 H, 8 outro | 104 | 4:37 | 2:58 | 2:36 |
Tempo changes everything. The same three-verse map lasts almost four minutes at 90 BPM and about two and a half at 140, which is why a boom bap beat and a trap beat with identical structures can differ by more than a minute. Each length is total bars times 240, divided by the BPM. The section logic behind these maps is in beat structure and song arrangement.
Leave room instead of filling it. Artists cut sections more easily than they add them, so a beat with three verse slots is safer than one with two. When in doubt, ask for a reference track and match its bar map.
Beat store previews vs full beats
Upload the finished arrangement and let the tag protect it. Artists who license a beat need every section, not a loop. BeatStars, for example, generates a tagged preview file and an untagged MP3 automatically when you upload an untagged WAV master and publish the beat[5], so one full-length master feeds both versions.
- Tagged preview The full arrangement with your voice tag at a few points. Artists write to what they hear, so a cut-down preview hides sections they might want.
- Untagged full beat The file delivered with a lease. Same length and arrangement as the preview.
- Stems or trackouts Each track of the same arrangement for mixing. Every stem must start at the same point and match the full beat's length exactly.
- Loop version Optional 8-16 bar loop for artists who want to build their own structure.
Keep the voice tag out of the vocal's way: before the first verse and in gaps, not on top of the hook melody. The producer tag guide covers placement, and selling beats on BeatStars covers the store side.
How long should a beat be for YouTube, Shorts and streaming?
Use the full beat for long-form YouTube uploads and a 15 to 60 second cut for short-form video. Keep the intro short on both, because viewers decide quickly.
YouTube now classifies square or vertical videos up to three minutes long as Shorts if they were uploaded on or after October 15, 2024[6]. That does not mean a Short should carry the whole beat. A 15 to 30 second hook clip usually does its job of sending viewers to the full video; the YouTube beat-selling funnel shows how the pieces connect.
For instrumentals on streaming services, 2 to 3 minutes with a change every 8 bars is a sensible target. Spotify's two-minute minimum applies only to functional noise recordings such as white noise and nature sounds[7], not to music. The real floor is the stream count itself: a track shorter than 30 seconds can never reach the point where Spotify counts a stream[2].
How long should a beat be for placements and pitches?
Send a full arrangement of about 2:30 to 3:30, but put the best part in the first 20 seconds. People who receive pitches often skim many beats in one sitting, so the opening decides whether the rest gets heard.
- Lead with the strongest loop Four bars of intro at most, then the section that sells the beat.
- Keep the structure readable Clear 8- and 16-bar blocks are easier for a writer to map than constant changes.
- Label the file Title, BPM and key in the filename, for example
Nightshift_140_Fmin.mp3. - Keep a long version ready Some artists want an extra verse or a longer outro for a video edit, so save the project in a state you can extend.
- Do not over-arrange A pitch beat that spends every idea in the first minute leaves the artist no room.
How to set your beat length before you arrange
- Decide the purpose
Full lease, pitch, teaser or streaming release. Each has a different target in the first table. - Pick a bar map
For a full rap beat, start with an 8-bar intro, three 16-bar verses, three 8-bar hooks and an 8-bar outro. - Do the math
Total bars times 240, divided by the BPM, gives seconds. 88 bars at 140 BPM is about 2:31. - Adjust to the target
Too long: cut a verse or halve the intro. Too short: add a verse slot or double the final hook. - Place markers
Mark every section in the DAW so the length stays visible while you arrange. - Export every version from one project
Full beat, tagged preview, teaser and loop all come from the same session so the timing matches.

Часто задаваемые вопросы
- How long should a beat be for a rapper?
- A beat for a rapper is usually about 2:30 to 3:30 long, with room for two or three 16-bar verses, 8-bar hooks, an intro and an outro. Sixteen bars is the usual length of a guest verse in rap. Tempo matters: the same 88-bar layout lasts about 3:55 at 90 BPM but about 2:31 at 140 BPM.
- Is a 2-minute beat too short?
- A 2-minute beat is not too short for a teaser, a lo-fi track or a fast trap beat with two verses. For a full lease meant to become a complete song, 2 minutes can be tight because it may only fit two short verses. Short songs are common now: 28 of the 144 songs nominated at the 2024 Grammys ran under three minutes.
- How long should a beat preview be?
- A beat preview in a store works best as the full arrangement with a voice tag, so artists can hear every section before buying. BeatStars can generate the tagged preview automatically when you upload an untagged WAV master and publish the beat. For social media teasers, use the hook or the best 8 bars, roughly 15 to 60 seconds.
- How many bars should a full beat have?
- A full beat for vocals usually has between about 56 and 104 bars, depending on how many verses and hooks it holds. A common three-verse map is an 8-bar intro, three 16-bar verses, three 8-bar hooks and an 8-bar outro, which totals 88 bars. At 140 BPM that lasts about 2 minutes 31 seconds; at 90 BPM about 3 minutes 55 seconds.
- Why are songs getting shorter?
- Songs are getting shorter because streaming rewards replays and fast engagement. Spotify counts a stream after 30 seconds of play, so short songs that get replayed earn more counted streams. The Washington Post found the average Billboard Hot 100 song fell from over four minutes to around three since 1990, with social video pushing the same way.
- How long can a YouTube Short with a beat be?
- A YouTube Short can be up to three minutes long for square or vertical videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024. For promoting a beat, a Short of 15 to 30 seconds built around the hook usually works better than the full track, because its job is to send viewers to the full video or the beat store.
