Formant shifting
Краткий ответ
Formant shifting moves the resonant peaks that give a voice its size and character without changing the note being sung. Pitch shifting without formant preservation moves both, which causes the chipmunk effect. To pitch vocals naturally, use a formant-preserving mode such as Ableton's Complex Pro, then shift formants separately for creative changes.
What is formant shifting?
Formant shifting moves a sound's resonant peaks up or down while leaving its pitch where it is. Shift formants up and a voice sounds smaller and younger; shift them down and it sounds bigger and darker, yet the melody stays the same.
Celemony describes formants as areas of emphasis or attenuation in the spectrum that stay in the same frequency ranges regardless of the note, and notes that shifting them can make a man's voice sound like a woman's and vice versa[1].
Producers use the concept in two directions. Formant preservation keeps a voice natural while the pitch moves. Formant shifting deliberately changes character while the pitch stays put. This page covers both, for vocals and for samples.
What is the difference between pitch and formants?
Pitch is the note you hear, set by the fundamental frequency of the vibration. Formants are the resonances of whatever the sound passes through, which for a voice is the throat, mouth and nose. The fundamental is sometimes called F0, but it is not a formant[2].
Formants are what make an "ah" different from an "ee" and what tell you a voice belongs to a large or small person. For an average male voice, the first two formants of "ah" sit near 750 Hz and 940 Hz, while "ee" sits near 240 Hz and 2,400 Hz[2]. A singer can hold either vowel on any note, which is the proof that pitch and formants are separate.
| Process | Pitch | Formants | What you hear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speed up or resample | Up | Up by the same amount | Faster, chipmunk-like voice |
| Pitch shift without formant preservation | Up or down | Move with the pitch | Smaller or larger voice, cartoonish at big intervals |
| Formant-preserving pitch shift | Up or down | Stay in place | Same singer on a new note |
| Formant shift only | Unchanged | Up or down | Same melody, different-sized or different-gender voice |
| Pitch down, formants up | Down | Up | Low note with a light, youthful tone |
Why does pitching vocals up make them sound like chipmunks?
Pitching up by resampling scales every frequency in the recording, including the formants, so the voice sounds like it comes from a much smaller vocal tract. When audio is sped up this way, all frequencies change at the same ratio as the speed, and scaling vocals like this distorts the formants into the familiar chipmunk effect[3].
The numbers make it obvious. Raise a vocal by 12 semitones and every frequency doubles, so an "ah" with a first formant near 750 Hz now resonates near 1,500 Hz. No adult vocal tract produces that, so the brain hears a cartoon.
Formant-preserving algorithms avoid this by separating the voice into its pitch and its spectral envelope, then resynthesizing the voice at a new fundamental while keeping the original envelope. Wikipedia describes the classic approach as analysis with a channel or LPC vocoder plus pitch detection, followed by resynthesis at a different fundamental frequency[3]. The chipmunk sound is still a valid choice, as the chipmunk soul guide shows, but it should be a decision rather than an accident.
How to pitch vocals without the chipmunk effect
Switch to a pitch-shifting mode that preserves formants, transpose, then fine-tune the formant amount by ear. Every major DAW or pitch plugin has a version of this control, even if the name differs.
- Pick a formant-aware algorithm
In Ableton Live, set the clip's warp mode to Complex Pro. At a Formants setting of 100%, the original formants are preserved even for large pitch changes[4]. - Match the Envelope setting to the source
Complex Pro's Envelope defaults to 128. Ableton suggests lower values for high-pitched material and higher values for low-pitched material[4]. - Transpose in small steps
Move the pitch a semitone at a time and listen. Shifts of a few semitones usually sound natural; larger jumps expose artifacts on breaths and sibilants. - Adjust formants by ear
If the result sounds slightly swallowed or thin, nudge the formants up or down by a fraction of a semitone rather than accepting the default. - Check the consonants
Solo the vocal and listen to S, T and breath sounds. If they smear, try a different algorithm or pitch only the sung phrase and leave the consonants untouched. - Commit to audio
Render the result so the DAW does not recalculate it and you can edit the new audio like any other take.
The same idea in other tools
FL Studio's Pitch Shifter shifts pitch from -12 to +12 semitones and has separate Formant and Formant Correction controls in its Voice tab[5]. In Melodyne, the Formant Tool (shortcut F3) shifts the formants of individual notes in cents, from tiny nuances to several thousand cents[1]. For note-level pitch editing around that, see the vocal tuning guide.
What are creative formant moves on vocals?
Once pitch and formants are independent, the formant control becomes a character knob. Small moves change perceived size and age; large moves change gender, species or turn the voice into an instrument.
- Deeper ad-libs Formants down 2-4 semitones with pitch unchanged makes ad-libs sound bigger and more menacing without leaving the key. Blend under the main take for weight.
- Wider doubles Formant one double up about 0.5 semitone and the other down by the same amount. The doubles separate from the lead without chorus or detune.
- Gender and character Shifts of several semitones move a voice across the male-female boundary. Adjust pitch as well if the melody should sit in the new singer's range.
- Pitched-down hooks Pitch a hook down an octave with formants preserved for a clear, heavy voice, or let formants drop too for the slowed, woozy sound.
- Formant sweeps Automate the formant control during a note for a wah-like vowel movement. It works like the vowel filters used in talking-bass sound design, but on a real voice.
Real-time tools make these moves easy to audition. Soundtoys' Little AlterBoy shifts pitch and formant independently in real time[6]; the Little AlterBoy vocal guide covers its trap ad-lib settings.
Does formant shifting work on samples and instruments?
Yes. Instruments have body resonances just like voices, so formant control changes their apparent size. A piano sample repitched with formants preserved still sounds like the same piano; with formants shifted down it sounds like a larger instrument.
Try it on vocal chops first: pitch the chop to fit the chord and preserve formants so it stays intelligible, or shift formants up for a lighter, airier texture. On drum loops, lowering formants slightly thickens snares and toms without changing the groove. Pitched instruments with strong resonances, such as guitars and horns, show the effect most clearly.
Formant tools depend on accurate pitch detection, so noisy, polyphonic or heavily reverberant material can glitch. Keep sources as dry and monophonic as you can. For wider pitch jumps on full loops, the guide to pitch shifting samples without artifacts covers algorithm choice in more depth.
Which plugins can shift formants?
You may already own a formant tool: Ableton Live's Complex Pro mode and FL Studio's Pitch Shifter both have one. Free and paid plugins fill the gap in other DAWs.

Часто задаваемые вопросы
- What does formant shifting do to a voice?
- Formant shifting changes the perceived size, age and gender of a voice without changing the note being sung. Moving formants up makes a voice sound smaller and lighter, while moving them down makes it sound bigger and darker. Melodyne's documentation gives the example of making a man's voice sound like a woman's and vice versa.
- What is the difference between pitch shifting and formant shifting?
- Pitch shifting changes the note, meaning the fundamental frequency, while formant shifting changes the resonant peaks that define timbre and vowel sound. A plain pitch shift moves both together, which is why big shifts sound unnatural. A formant-preserving pitch shift changes only the note, and a formant shift changes only the character, so the two can be controlled independently.
- How do I stop pitched vocals sounding like chipmunks?
- Stop the chipmunk effect by using a formant-preserving pitch shifter instead of simple resampling. In Ableton Live, choose the Complex Pro warp mode and set Formants to 100%, which preserves the original formants even for large pitch changes. In other DAWs, look for a formant, formant correction or preserve formants option in the pitch tool.
- Why does speeding up a song change the voice?
- Speeding up a song by resampling scales every frequency by the same ratio, so the pitch and the vocal formants rise together. Higher formants suggest a much smaller vocal tract, which is why sped-up vocals sound childlike or chipmunk-like. Time-stretching with formant preservation avoids this but sounds different from the classic sped-up style.
- Is there a free formant shifter plugin?
- Yes. Auburn Sounds offers a Free Edition of Graillon 3, and the developer lists pitch shifting and formant shifting among the plugin's features for Windows, macOS and Linux. Ableton Live users also have formant control built into the Complex Pro warp mode at no extra cost.
- How many semitones can you formant shift before it sounds fake?
- There is no fixed limit for formant shifting. As a rule of thumb, start with one to three semitones of formant movement for changes that still sound like the same singer, and expect shifts of four or five semitones and more to read as a different person or an effect. Treat subtle shifts as mixing moves and large shifts as sound design, and always judge the result in the full mix rather than solo.
